Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Modern home batteries are rated for outdoor use down to minus 20 C ambient because an internal heater keeps the cells near 0 C. What the minus 20 rating really means, how Tesla's Heat Mode works with its own Toronto data, the Ontario code capacity difference (80 kWh outdoor vs 20 kWh indoor), and when the garage wins.

A home battery backup system stores electricity and powers your house automatically the moment the grid goes down. Most Canadian homes use a 10 to 20 kWh lithium battery for essential loads, or a larger configuration for whole home coverage. Whole home versus essential loads, real runtimes, installed costs, winter performance, and where rebates fit.

A Tesla can power your home only through Tesla's own Powershare system, and today that ships on the Cybertruck. Third party bidirectional chargers are not authorized by Tesla and can void the vehicle's warranty. Here is what Powershare permits in Canada, and the warranty safe ways to get backup power now.

The Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program (CGHAP) gives free home energy retrofits, such as heat pumps and insulation, to low and median income homeowners and tenants. A provincial delivery partner installs the work at no cost. As of August 2026 the program runs in Manitoba, British Columbia, Quebec, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Ontario is not yet participating.

A whole home battery backup in Ontario connects at your service entrance and can power your entire electrical panel, up to 200 amps. A backup subpanel powers only a few chosen circuits. That single wiring decision controls what stays on during an outage and how much you can save on Ontario's overnight electricity rates.

Ontario's Electrical Safety Code allows home batteries in exactly four locations: an attached garage, a detached garage or free standing structure, the exterior wall of the house, or a dedicated utility room built to fire safety specs. Sleeping areas are prohibited outright. The detail that decides most installs: outdoor wall and attached garage placements allow up to 80 kWh, four times the 20 kWh per system indoor room limit. Basements are now allowed under the 2024 code if the room is built to spec. The 1 m clearance rule, the winter tradeoff on outdoor units, what belongs in your quote before you sign, and how location affects cost. Verified against ESA Bulletin 64-8-2 and Rule 64-1100.

The Region of Waterloo's RetrofitWR program lends eligible homeowners up to $40,000 at a 2.5% fixed rate for upgrades that cut home energy use, and rooftop solar and battery storage are on the eligible list. You repay it over 10 or 15 years through your monthly GrandBridge Energy bill, which is also the catch: loans are limited to GrandBridge customers, meaning Cambridge and the Township of North Dumfries today. Your home must achieve at least a 25% reduction in energy use, judged on the whole project. The real monthly numbers, the $500 to $700 upfront assessment, the incentives deducted from your balance, and the net metering versus HRS rebate decision that Waterloo Region homeowners get wrong. Get paid to charge your EV at home in Ontario? The money is real and comes from Canada's Clean Fuel Regulations, where fuel companies buy carbon credits and your home charging session helps create one. Advertised rates ranged from about $0.03 to $0.18 per kWh as of July 2026, roughly $90 to $540 a year for a typical driver. The dated rates behind Roulez Electrique, EcoWatt, Grizzl-E Club, ChargeLab and WattsApp, the 100 percent reinvestment mandate that explains the high numbers, the one charger one program rule that locks your charger for a calendar year, and how the reward stacks with solar. Halifax Regional Municipality's Solar City program finances solar at a 4.75% fixed rate over 10 years through a voluntary Local Improvement Charge, with no credit check and no upfront cost. HRM pays your contractor directly after a Certification of Completion, early payoff is penalty free, and the charge is billed separately from your property tax bill (a detail most websites get wrong). Open to homeowners, non profits, places of worship, co operatives, and charities in HRM. Full 2026 terms, the step by step process, and how it pairs with Nova Scotia Power net metering at about 19.1 cents per kWh.

The Switch West Hants program has relaunched. West Hants homeowners in Nova Scotia can finance solar over 15 years at a fixed 6.45% rate with no upfront cost, up to $40,000 or 25% of assessed property value. The PACE program run by SwitchPACE CIC with West Hants Regional Municipality pays your contractor directly after a signed Certificate of Completion, ties repayment to the property instead of personal credit, and pairs with Nova Scotia Power net metering (about 19.1 cents per kWh as of May 2026) now that the SolarHomes rebate and Greener Homes Loan have closed. Full 2026 terms, eligibility, step by step process, and what to check before signing.

R32 is the refrigerant inside many of the newest cold climate heat pumps sold in Ontario. Global warming potential 675, about a third of the older R410A, and up to about 10 percent more efficient. Which brands actually use R32 in Canada (Daikin and Fujitsu, while Mitsubishi, Carrier and Lennox run R454B), why the switch is federal law under Canada's HFC phase down, A2L safety facts, HRSP heat pump rebates up to 7,500 dollars, and real 2026 installed costs from 3,500 dollars for a single zone ductless to 12,000 to 18,000 dollars for a ducted 3 ton cold climate system.

Solar on Elexicon Energy in 2026: net metering, HRSP rebates, real costs, timelines and Durham Region coverage. The utility is the local distribution company for ten east central Ontario municipalities: Ajax, Belleville, Brock, Clarington urban areas, Gravenhurst, Pickering, Port Hope, Scugog, Uxbridge and Whitby. Net metering under O. Reg. 541/05 with a one to one credit and 12 month rollover, up to 5,000 dollar Home Renovation Savings solar rebate plus a separate up to 5,000 dollar battery rebate, Time of Use versus Ultra Low Overnight rate math, installed cost 18,000 to 32,000 dollars, and 7 to 12 year payback for Durham Region homes.

Ontario homeowners got hit with a 29-30% hydro rate increase in November 2025, and rates are projected to keep climbing through 2027. Pairing solar with a cold-climate heat pump can cut a typical hydro bill by 60-80%. The HRSP rebate stack: up to $5,000 for solar, $5,000 for battery, and up to $7,500 for a qualifying heat pump (non-gas-heated homes), up to $17,500 combined. Full 2026 guide: real costs, sizing math, net metering vs load displacement decision, ULO arbitrage savings, install order, and rebate stacking rules. By the Solar X Engineering Team.

Most Ontario homeowners look at the total on their hydro bill and file it away. Here is what every single line actually means: electricity charges (TOU, Tiered, or ULO), delivery charges (the $51.18/month fixed Toronto Hydro fee plus variable per-kWh), regulatory charges, the embedded Global Adjustment, the 23.5% Ontario Electricity Rebate, and 13% HST, plus exactly which charges solar panels eliminate and which ones stay. By Marcus Thibodeau, Solar X Residential Energy Analyst.

Before your solar installer arrives, there is one phone call most Ontario homeowners forget to make. Most Ontario home insurance policies cover rooftop solar panels under dwelling coverage, but coverage is not automatic. You must notify your insurer, update your dwelling coverage limit to reflect the system's full replacement value, and confirm specific perils are covered. Typical annual premium increase: $75 to $150. Ground-mounted systems hit the 10% other-structures cap. Equipment breakdown (inverter failure) requires a separate endorsement. The five-step pre-install checklist that protects your policy.

The Ontario Energy Board sets every residential electricity rate in Ontario. Here is how the process works, what changed in 2025-2026 (29-30% rate increase, OER rebate raised to 23.5%, Hydro Ottawa's 16% request rejected), and what homeowners can do about it. By Marcus Thibodeau (Solar X Residential Energy Analyst).

On June 30, 2026, Save on Energy is cutting the Retrofit Program commercial solar PV incentive from $860 to $770 per kW AC, a 10 percent reduction. Complete applications submitted before the cutoff are honoured at the higher rate, subject to review and approval. Microgeneration systems up to 10 kW DC stay at $1,000/kW DC. Who qualifies, the one rule that decides your rate, and what a smart business does before June 30. By the Solar X Team (ESA/ECRA licensed, NABCEP certified).

Real production gains for bifacial ground mount solar in Ontario: typical 5 to 15 percent over one-sided panels, up to 30 percent over snow or white gravel. Yes, you can net meter a ground mount under O. Reg. 541/05 (since the 2021 revocation of O. Reg. 274/18). No, ground mount does not qualify for the HRS rebate, which is rooftop only. The tradeoff: HRS recipients give up net metering, ground mount owners keep it. By the Solar X Team (ESA/ECRA licensed, NABCEP certified).

The honest engineering breakdown of string, hybrid, and microinverter options for Ontario homes. Why DC-coupled hybrid inverters let you oversize panels and add batteries inside Ontario's 12 kW AC cap, when microinverters still win (small arrays, multi-direction roofs, heavy shade), and the 4-step framework to choose. By the Solar X Engineering Team (ESA/ECRA licensed, NABCEP certified).

Verify the ESA/ECRA licence, confirm full turnkey project management, compare quotes line by line, and understand the rule most buyers miss: homes that take the Home Renovation Savings rebate cannot also use net metering. Includes a 6-point vetting checklist.

NB Power has filed proposed net metering changes with the NBEUB (Matter EL-003-2025): a new ~$13/kW demand charge, export credits cut from full retail to about 6.77¢/kWh, and a grandfathering window that closes October 31, 2026. What the proposal says, what's still up for debate, and what New Brunswick homeowners and businesses should do before the door closes.

Ontario hydro rates jumped 29% on November 1, 2025 per the OEB. The IESO forecasts Ontario demand to grow 75% by 2050; the Canada Energy Regulator forecasts Canadian end-use electricity demand to rise 44% by 2050. EV adoption, AI data centres, $20B+ in nuclear refurbishment and SMRs, and rising distribution charges stack on top. Solar locks in a flat per-kWh cost for 30 years.

Ontario wholesale electricity prices are forecast to rise 71% on average and 64% on-peak from late 2025 to late 2026, per the OEB-commissioned forecast by Power Advisory LLC. Three drivers: five nuclear units begin refurbishment in September 2026, carbon pricing on gas generation rises to $125/tonne by 2027, and natural gas prices climb 34%. The drivers, the data, and what it means for your hydro bill.
