The Best Time to Install Solar Panels in Ontario: Why Fall 2026 Is Different

Why is fall 2026 different from a normal fall?

Two events land back to back this autumn, and both push the same direction.

First, Ontario Power Generation is scheduled to take all four remaining reactors at the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station offline in September 2026 for a multiyear refurbishment, per OPG's own project updates. A Bruce Power unit is scheduled to follow in the same window. That removes a large block of baseload generation from the grid at once.

Second, the Ontario Energy Board sets residential electricity prices once a year, on November 1, and the wholesale forecast the OEB commissioned for the coming winter points sharply upward. What matters here is narrower: the final household prices had not been announced as of September 2026, and the date they take effect is fixed.

Nobody can tell you today exactly what your rate will be this winter. What is already certain is the direction of the pressure and the date the reset takes effect. A solar project started in September is a project whose approvals run during October rather than starting from zero in December.

What do today's electricity prices mean for solar timing?

The shape of the problem sits in the first and third rows. Summer on peak covers the middle of the day, which is exactly when a rooftop system produces most of its power, and the ULO evening price is already 39.1 cents. Whatever the OEB announces this fall, the new prices will apply to whatever your home still draws from the grid.

How long does a solar project actually take in Ontario?

The part people picture, panels going onto the roof, usually takes one to two days. Almost all of the calendar goes to everything around it, and most of those steps are not controlled by any installer.

A residential project in Ontario moves through a fixed sequence: a site assessment, system design, contract, building permit, installation, inspection by the Electrical Safety Authority, connection approval from your local utility, and rebate processing where a rebate applies. Each approval belongs to the permit office, the ESA, or the utility, and their queues vary by municipality and season. That is why no honest installer will promise you an energization date, and why we do not.

This is the whole timing argument in one sentence: you cannot compress the approval queue, you can only decide when you join it. Joining it in September means the paperwork phase runs through fall. Joining it in December means starting the same clock with winter weather layered on top.

Payback estimates there run several years to over a decade depending on rates, usage, and rebate path. Every home is different, which is exactly what the assessment step exists to answer.

Which season is the best time to install solar panels in Ontario?

Solar is installed in Ontario in every month of the year. The question is not whether a season works, but what each starting point sets in motion.

Approval timing varies by utility and municipality and is never guaranteed in any season. The table shows tendencies, not promises.

Fall wins on the combination: comfortable install conditions, approvals that run before the worst weather, and a system that enters the high production months of spring already connected. Where does the Home Renovation Savings rebate fit into timing?

As of September 2026, the Home Renovation Savings program, delivered by Save on Energy and Enbridge Gas with support from the Government of Ontario, is open and includes rooftop solar and battery storage. Per the program, the solar rebate is $1,000 per kW installed up to $5,000, and the battery rebate is $300 per kWh up to $5,000 when the battery is installed with new rooftop solar, for a combined maximum of $10,000. The program has no published end date, and its terms allow changes, so amounts and eligibility are only certain once an application is approved.

Two timing rules matter more than any deadline. Program approval must be in place before equipment is purchased or installed, so the application belongs at the start of your project, not the end. And the program rules make its solar and battery incentives incompatible with a net metering agreement: rebate systems must be designed for load displacement, meaning all generation is consumed on site with zero export to the grid, while net metering trades the rebate for one to one bill credits on exported power. In plain terms, net metering sends your surplus to the grid for a bill credit, and load displacement keeps every kilowatt hour at home. Also worth knowing for system sizing: since May 1, 2026, the OEB micro generation threshold for simplified residential connections is 12 kW AC, up from 10 kW.

When is waiting the right call?

Sometimes the right answer is not yet, and we would rather tell you that at the assessment than have you find out after signing.

Wait if your roof is near the end of its life. Panels last decades, and removing and reinstalling a system to replace shingles underneath it is an avoidable cost. Reroof first. Wait, or reconsider entirely, if your roof carries heavy shade or your household uses very little electricity. A system that cannot produce enough, or offsets a bill that is already small, may never justify its cost, and solar is simply not right for some houses. And think carefully if you plan to sell within a year or two, since system ownership and any attached financing carry implications a buyer will ask about.

Waiting for the OEB rate announcement itself is also a legitimate choice. The tradeoff is simple and worth stating plainly: the rate announcement will not shorten anyone's approval queue, and the reset takes effect on November 1 either way.

The best time to install solar panels in Ontario is the moment that gives your approvals room to run, and this year that points squarely at early fall.
