Why everyone suddenly wants their car to power their house
The appeal is obvious once you see the numbers. A Cybertruck carries a battery of roughly 123 kWh. A typical home battery holds 10 to 15 kWh. The vehicle in the driveway stores the energy of several home batteries, and during an outage that difference feels enormous.
Quick definition: vehicle to home, usually written V2H, means the vehicle's battery sends power into the house. Vehicle to grid, or V2G, means the vehicle sends power back to the utility grid.
So the question lands in our inbox weekly: can my Tesla do this? The honest answer has two halves, and the second half is the one that protects your warranty.
What Tesla actually permits
Tesla's answer is its own system, called Powershare. Per Tesla's published documentation, Powershare is Tesla's bidirectional charging solution, and vehicle to home functionality with a Tesla is supported only through it.

The third party question, answered straight
There are third party chargers on the market that claim bidirectional charging with Tesla vehicles. Some of them can, in a purely technical sense, move power out of a Tesla.
Compatible is not the same as authorized, and the difference is your vehicle warranty.
Tesla has not authorized or verified these products for its vehicles. Per Tesla's published support and warranty documentation, bidirectional functionality with Tesla vehicles is supported only through Powershare, and unauthorized bidirectional use can void the vehicle's warranty. A Tesla vehicle warranty covers the most expensive components you own, the battery and drive unit, for eight years. Trading that coverage for backup power is a bad exchange, and it is one a software update from the manufacturer can end at any time.
Our position as an installer certified on multiple ecosystems is simple: we design to what the vehicle manufacturer permits. If you drive a Tesla and want your vehicle powering your home, Powershare is the route, and we install it. We do not connect unauthorized bidirectional equipment to any manufacturer's vehicle, because your warranties, on the car and on the house, are part of what you are paying us to protect.
What if you do not drive a Tesla?
Vehicle to home is arriving brand by brand, and the rule is the same for every one of them: the vehicle manufacturer's authorization decides, not the charger's spec sheet. A small number of EVs support manufacturer authorized vehicle to home today, for example Ford's F 150 Lightning using Ford's own home integration equipment. Before planning backup power around any EV, read the vehicle's warranty terms and the manufacturer's published V2H documentation, and bring both to your installer.
The warranty safe way to get backup power today
If the goal is a house that stays on during an outage, you do not need to wait for your vehicle to be allowed to help. A dedicated home battery does the same job with every warranty intact, and in Ontario it comes with real money attached as of August 2026:
The Home Renovation Savings program offers up to $5,000 for eligible home battery storage, subject to eligibility, pre approval before purchase, and the program's load displacement rules. And Ontario's Ultra Low Overnight rate plan, at 3.9 cents per kWh overnight against 39.1 cents on peak as of the November 2025 rates, lets a battery earn its keep daily, not just during outages.
