Commercial Solar Installation in Ontario

Battery-Optimized Systems Engineered for ROI, Not Headlines

Solar X designs and installs battery-integrated commercial solar systems across Ontario. Every installation is engineered by ESA/ECRA-licensed electricians who understand three-phase infrastructure, load displacement regulations, and how to structure a system that delivers measurable financial returns — not marketing claims.

Peak Shaving & Demand Reduction

Why Commercial Solar in Ontario Requires Battery Integration

Commercial properties in Ontario operate under the same load displacement framework as residential — surplus solar production cannot be exported to the grid for credit. But the financial impact is amplified at commercial scale.

A 100kW rooftop system on a warehouse or manufacturing facility will routinely overproduce during midday hours when production peaks but facility loads may dip (lunch breaks, shift changes, seasonal variation). Without battery storage, that surplus is curtailed. At commercial scale, curtailed production can represent tens of thousands of dollars in unrealized value annually.

Battery-backed peak shaving adds a second revenue layer. Commercial electricity bills include demand charges based on peak consumption. A battery system that discharges during peak demand periods directly reduces these charges — a benefit that stacks on top of solar offset savings.

Solar Only

Midday surplus curtailed. Demand charges unchanged. ROI limited to direct consumption offset.

Solar + Battery

Surplus captured and time-shifted. Peak demand charges reduced. Dual revenue stream maximizes ROI.

Federal Investment Tax Credit: 30% Back on Eligible Equipment

The federal Clean Technology Investment Tax Credit provides a refundable credit on eligible solar and battery equipment for incorporated businesses. This credit applies to the capital cost of qualifying clean energy property and may materially improve project economics.

Accelerated Capital Cost Allowance under Class 43.1/43.2 allows accelerated depreciation of solar equipment, further improving after-tax returns for commercial operators.

Solar X provides the documentation your accountant needs to claim these credits. We do not provide tax advice — but we ensure every eligible component is properly categorized.

Save ON Energy: Commercial Retrofit Incentives

The IESO's Save on Energy Retrofit Program provides incentives for commercial and institutional solar installations designed for load displacement. Qualifying systems may receive up to $860 per kW of installed AC inverter capacity.

Systems must be designed for load displacement — generation capacity cannot exceed the facility's peak demand. Solar X engineers every commercial system to maximize incentive eligibility while ensuring the system is sized for actual consumption patterns, not theoretical maximums.

Regional adders may apply in specific Ontario postal codes. Solar X checks eligibility as part of every commercial assessment.

Three-Phase ESA Compliance

Commercial solar installations on three-phase infrastructure require stricter electrical design, additional disconnects, and more rigorous ESA inspection. Systems that fail inspection delay interconnection and revenue generation.

Solar X is an ESA/ECRA-licensed electrical contractor — not a general contractor subcontracting the electrical scope. Our team designs, installs, and commissions commercial systems end-to-end. This single-source accountability eliminates the coordination failures that cause inspection delays.

Who Commercial Solar Is Best For

Strong Fit

  • Property-owning businesses with consistent daytime electricity loads exceeding $2,000/month
  • Warehouses, manufacturing facilities, and distribution centres with large flat rooflines
  • Retail plazas, office buildings, and institutional properties (schools, community centres)
  • Agricultural operations — greenhouses, wineries, cold storage, processing facilities
  • Incorporated businesses eligible for the 30% federal ITC

Not the Right Fit (Currently)

  • Tenants leasing commercial space (landlord approval and structural assessment required)
  • Businesses expecting to sell surplus electricity to the grid
  • Properties with less than 3,000 sq ft of available, unobstructed roof surface
  • Operations with exclusively overnight loads (solar production does not align)
