Why King City Farms Are Ideal for Solar

King City sits within King Township's rural belt — a region with high annual sun hours (4.4 peak hours/day), large unshaded barn roofs and open land, and rising hydro costs that hit agricultural operations harder than residential. Farms running irrigation pumps, grain dryers, cold storage, lighting, and outbuildings pay commercial hydro rates year-round. Solar directly offsets those costs from day one — and Ontario's net metering program means every kilowatt-hour you generate but don't use earns you a credit against future bills.

Why King City Makes Sense

King Township has some of Ontario's best solar conditions — and most farm owners aren't taking advantage.

Strong Solar Resource

King City receives approximately 4.4 peak sun hours per day — above the Ontario average — making both rooftop and ground-mount systems highly productive across the full calendar year, including through Ontario winters.

High Agricultural Energy Consumption

Farms run constant, predictable loads: HVAC, refrigeration, pumps, lighting, and equipment charging. These are ideal loads to offset with solar — the math works better on farms than on most residential properties.

Net Metering Access (IESO)

Ontario's net metering program allows agricultural customers to export surplus solar generation back to the grid, earning credits against future bills. King Township properties on Alectra Utilities or Hydro One qualify.

Space for Larger Systems

Barns, equipment sheds, and open fields give King City farms the roof and land area to install systems sized 30 kW to 500 kW — producing meaningfully more value than a standard residential 10 kW system.

2026 Incentives for Ontario Farms

What's Available This Year

Program Note: Incentive programs change annually. Solar X verifies eligibility for every project before contracts are signed. Never commit to a system based on incentives that haven't been confirmed for your specific property and utility.

Federal Grant

Canada Greener Homes for Agri-Food (CGHA)

The federal government has extended support for energy efficiency and renewable energy upgrades on Canadian agricultural operations. Eligible farm properties may access grant funding for solar PV installations as part of broader on-farm energy reduction initiatives.

Eligibility:Active farming operations with CRA farm income
Typical Funding:$25,000–$100,000+ depending on system size
Requires:Energy audit and project documentation
Status:Confirm current intake status at time of assessment
Ongoing Utility Credit

Ontario Net Metering Program (IESO)

Net metering is not a one-time rebate — it is a billing mechanism that permanently changes how your utility bill works. Every kilowatt-hour your system generates but doesn't use on-site is exported to the grid and credited against future consumption.

Available to:Alectra Utilities and Hydro One customers in King Township
Credit rollover:Monthly, up to 12 months
System size:No upper cap under current IESO rules for behind-the-meter systems
Billing:True-up annually — surplus credits do not convert to cash
Federal Cost-Share

Agricultural Clean Technology Program (ACT) — AAFC

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's ACT program provides non-repayable contributions for adopting clean energy systems on-farm. Solar PV is an eligible technology under the Adoption stream. Solar X helps clients prepare documentation for competitive intakes.

Contribution:Up to 50% of eligible project costs
Maximum:$2 million per applicant (Adoption stream)
Eligibility:Canadian farmers, agri-businesses, Indigenous agricultural operations
Note:Competitive intake; applications reviewed in funding windows
Municipal / Provincial

Property Tax Exemption (Ontario)

In Ontario, solar energy systems installed on agricultural land are generally exempt from being assessed as an improvement that increases property tax. King Township properties benefit from this protection — your investment doesn't trigger a reassessment.

Governed by:Ontario Assessment Act
Application:No separate application required
Documentation:Solar X records system classification at permitting stage

Agricultural Use Cases

Every farm has different loads. We size accordingly.

🏚️

Barn & Outbuilding Rooftop Systems

The most common agricultural install. Metal roofs on barns and equipment sheds are well-suited to rail-and-clamp mounting systems. We assess roof age, orientation, pitch, and structural load before any design is produced.

Typical system size:30 kW – 150 kW
Best for:Dairy, poultry, equestrian, mixed-use farms
Roof compatibility:Steel standing seam, corrugated metal
Permits required:Building permit, ESA inspection, utility interconnection
🌾

Ground-Mount Arrays (Open Field)

Where roof space is limited or suboptimal, ground-mount systems on unused or lower-value land provide maximum output with optimal tilt and orientation. Fixed-tilt and seasonal-adjustable options available.

Typical system size:50 kW – 500 kW+
Best for:Cash crop, vegetable, hobby farms with available acreage
Setback requirements:King Township zoning and Agricultural Land Use policies apply
Note:Confirm Greenbelt or Oak Ridges Moraine overlay before site selection
❄️

Cold Storage & Refrigeration Offset

Refrigeration and cold storage are among the highest electricity consumers on farm. Solar systems can be designed to prioritize these loads, with optional battery storage to cover overnight demand.

Battery storage:Optional add-on; reviewed case-by-case for ROI
Applicable to:Vegetable storage, flower operations, food processing
Load profile:Constant daytime load — ideal solar offset candidate
🐴

Equestrian & Hobby Farm Properties

King City has a high concentration of equestrian properties. These operations run lighting, heating, ventilation, and water systems year-round. Solar offsets utility costs while maintaining the aesthetic character of premium rural properties.

System size:Typically 10 kW – 50 kW
Mounting:Low-profile roof or discreet ground-mount options
Financing:Available — agricultural or home equity financing accepted

How It Works

From first call to grid-connected — here's what to expect.

FAQ

Common Questions from King City Farmers

Will solar affect my farm's agricultural land designation or Greenbelt status?

Ground-mount systems require a zoning review. Some King Township parcels fall within the Oak Ridges Moraine or Greenbelt areas, which restrict land use changes. Solar X reviews zoning and designation before any design or contract is produced. Rooftop systems on existing structures generally do not trigger a designation review.

How does net metering actually work for a farm?

Your meter tracks energy you consume from the grid and energy your system exports. At the end of each month, exported kilowatt-hours are credited against what you consumed. If you export more than you use in a given month, credits roll forward. Unused annual credits do not convert to cash — they are forfeited at the anniversary date under current IESO rules.

Can I still qualify for farm incentives if the property is in a family holding company?

It depends on the program. Federal programs like ACT typically require the applicant to demonstrate active farming income. Corporate structures are often eligible but may require additional documentation. We review your structure during the free assessment at no cost.

What happens to my system if I sell the property?

Solar systems are attached to the property and transfer with title. Net metering agreements are reassigned to the new owner. Financing instruments (loans or liens) must be resolved at or before closing — your Solar X contract specifies this clearly.

How long does installation take on a working farm?

We design our installation schedule around your operational needs. Barn installations are typically completed in 2–4 days of active crew time. We do not shut down operations during installation. Specific scheduling is confirmed with your project manager before mobilization.

Do you handle everything, or do I need to hire other contractors?

Solar X manages the full scope: design, permits, utility interconnection, installation, ESA inspection, and commissioning. You do not need a separate electrician, permit expeditor, or utility liaison.
