When looking for a secure way to power your home, there are two types of battery systems that are suitable for backup and blackout protection to consider:

The first type is the most commonly found, a Lead Acid battery. Some Lead Acid batteries require maintenance and can not be stored at cold temperatures. That’s why we use high-end AGM’s batteries which are maintenance-free, cold-resistant and have a longer life on average.

The second type is a higher cost, yet modern chemistry is the Lithium-Ion battery. Lithium-Ion is also maintenance-free and can be easily installed in homes and has a long-life expectancy as well.

In either case, each technology comes with a manufacturer warranty which is not limited by their respective cycle life. Assuming the average of 5 blackout incidents per year according to the OEB. Over the course of 20 years, this might result in just 100 cycles. The AGM battery can easily provide 800 cycles and most Lithium chemistries a few thousand cycles. Therefore, either solution can provide security and peace of mind for many years to come. Here are 9 options to consider when thinking of purchasing a backup or off-grid solution:

Sizing Guide for Batteries

Solar X’s home battery backup systems are designed to provide backup power to critical loads in a home in the case of a power outage in Canada. Critical loads are typically the following items in your home:

  • Fridge & Freezer
  • Lighting
  • Communication infrastructure
  • Furnace Fans and Controls

During normal operation when the grid power is available, the internal transfer relay is closed, and all loads are powered directly by the grid. When the grid fails, the battery detects the loss of power on the grid input terminal and immediately opens the transfer relay and initiates the battery operation. This transfer happens very quickly within 16 milliseconds and is therefore nearly instant and will not affect the continuous operation of the connected loads.

Besides the power capabilities, the runtime of the battery is an important aspect to pay attention to. Statistically, most grid power outages do not last very long, therefore you only need a system to last you a few hours, and to keep the aforementioned critical loads running. The following table can give you an idea of how long the system could last on battery power in different load scenarios:

We recommend simple systems, that can be installed easily and can be scaled to your needs. The most common battery selection is the maintenance-free Pylontech 2 Module lithium-ion battery (Option 4). For most residential backup applications, this battery type represents the best combination of longevity, maintenance-free operation, and at an attractive price.
